VSNL Gets Serious on WiMAX

VSNL plans to invest Rs. 1,000 crore for its WiMAX services to be rolled out in several cities.

VSNL already runs a WiMAX service for enterprises in Bangalore and has been allocated spectrum for another 50-60 cities. The company hopes to roll out the services in at least 100 cities before March 2008.

This is a good news for all Internet enthusiasts. No need to tie up with the landline DSL anymore, you can take your laptop to wherever you want (within the city limits) and start browsing.

I feel that the catch would be the cost. Airtel, Reliance and BSNL charge around Rs. 250 per month for basic DSL. If you want unlimited DSL, it would cost around Rs. 1,000 per month. WiMAX may be costlier than this. That’s why VSNL plans to target companies first rather than retail customers.
