Vodafone, T-Mobile enter project to improve wireless broadband

Cellcos T-Mobile and Vodafone Germany are teaming up with the German government, universities and vendors in a project to develop and trial new technologies capable of producing faster wireless broadband speeds for the future. The partners, with financial support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, will evaluate ways to increasing the throughput and capacity of future cellular networks. They will build two testbeds, one a ten base station, 30 cell testbed infrastructure in Dresden and the other a two base station, four cell network in Berlin. The project aims to optimise multi-antenna and multi-cell cooperative techniques, seeking to improve spectral efficiency and system performance by investigating relaying, interference coordination and cancellation. The project, given the snappy, if somewhat contrived name of EASY-C (Enablers for Ambient Services and Systems – Part C), will begin construction of the prototype networks soon ahead of field tests scheduled for 2008.
