Safaricom plans 3G rollout

Kenya’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, Safaricom, says it plans to launch a 3G network in urban areas ‘soon’, and ultimately aims to roll out high speed mobile services to the rest of the country, including all tourist resorts, businesses, schools and hospitals. In November 2006 Safaricom announced that it was to begin a twelve-month trial of 3G and 3.5G technology in Nairobi. At the time, the firm said that it would not commit to a full 3G launch until it was confident that there was consumer demand, and even then the high speed networks would be deployed only in major cities.
