Cameras in mobile phones are common today. Any standard mobile phone consists of camera and more high-edge mobiles have high quality cameras. OmniVision is one of the major suppliers of CMOS CameraChip solutions for superior imaging applications. Now its 5.17 megapixel auto-focus camera module for mobile handsets is based around the OV5623 CameraChip sensor which has been built using OmniVision’s proprietary OmniPixel2(TM) technology, an innovative pixel design manufactured using 0.13-micron CMOS process technology. This 14mm x 14mm x 8.75mm module is sure to give a distinct value to the mobile phones as it will support the applications of high-resolution cameras in the handsets. This 5 megapixel camera solution has auto-focus capability, which was previously used only for digital still cameras (DSC) and luxurious camera phones. But now this has brought finer image quality and camera performance nearer to the average rated camera phone market. The OV5623 CameraChip sensor at the core of the 5 megapixel module has an optical format of just 1/2.5 inches and a 2592 x 1944 image array with digital image stabilization potentiality. A 10-bit A/D converter makes possible the OV5623 to function at 7.5 frames per second (fps) in full resolution or 60 fps at an 864 x 648 resolution for improved video viewing on a TV screen. Though the device is specially meant to target the mobile market, it is also suitable for DSC video and hybrid camera applications.
