Olof to head Bharti Lanka venture

Domestic telecom major Bharti Airtel, which will shortly start its mobile services in neighbouring Sri Lanka, has appointed Olof Haag as chairman and country head of Bharti Airtel Lanka Pvt Ltd.

“Olof is a seasoned telecom industry professional and his experience will go a long way in fulfilling our objective of providing good services to customers,” Bharti Airtel President, Mobile Services, Sanjay Kapoor said in a statement.

Bharti will also appoint a CEO for the Lanka operation soon.

Olof was the Chairman of The Asia Consulting Bureau Pvt Ltd, prior to joining Bharti Airtel Lanka.

Bharti Airtel plans to spend $200 million in the next five years in the island nation to strengthen its operations.

Bharti plans to offer second and third generation mobile phone services as Sri Lanka’s fifth carrier and is putting networks in place to start its services in the island by April 2008.
